Sligo Kayak Club typically runs 2-3 beginner courses each summer starting in mid-late May. The courses are run by a Canoeing Ireland qualified instructor and are aimed at those who are new to kayaking and will give you the skills required to paddde on flatwater safely.
We follow the Canoeing Ireland skills curriculum and at the end of the course conduct an assessment for the Level 2 skills award.
Courses are typically run over weekends but occasionally we run weekday evening courses. Each course is approximately 10-12 hours.
- Evening Course: Tuesday 6pm-8pm for 6 weeks
- Weekend Course: Friday 6pm-8pm, Saturday 10am-2pm, Sunday 10am-2pm
The course fees are listed on our membership fees page.
All beginners must have a basic ability to swim (25m with a buoyancy aid) and ideally be over 12 years of age. A wetsuit is highly recommended but not required. All other equipment required will be provided by Sligo Kayak Club and is included in the course fee. For weekend courses it is recommended to bring lunch/refreshments on the Saturday & Sunday.
